Should I stay, or should I go?

Life has been getting in the way of this blog. Since moving to Devon I've started running Retreat West and I'm also blogging on that site. Not only I am I running the retreats I've also launched the short story competition and will be e-publishing an anthology of the winners.

My latest Open University module on creative writing began; and I am also doing an online course with The Writers' Workshop to learn the skills I need to edit the novel I finished last year. Then of course there's the day job to fit in, the second novel I have started and the flash fictions I'm working on for competition entries. So with all of this going on I have virtually abandoned Saintly Writer and I have been debating whether I should make this a permanent thing.

But I decided not to. What I'm going to do instead is make a plan. In fact I'm going to make two plans - one for the Retreat West blog and another for this one. These plans will mean that each blog gets a post a week. Surely I can manage a blog a week for each - I'm a writer, for God's sake!

Although I sometimes, actually often, feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew (terrible writing to include such a blatant cliché!), the real problem lies in the fact that I am completely unorganised. So that is set to change. Another house move is on the cards, in just over a week's time, and then once we are settled in to what looks like will be a long-term home this time, my new, more organised life begins.

The new home is a 470-year old cottage that is part of a working farm and I have a feeling it will prove inspirational to be surrounded by the many animals they have there - pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, horses and, best of all, alpacas! It's in the very beautiful Heddon Valley, which is the area that made us want to move to Devon in the first place, and it's only a five minute walk into the village to go to the pub and the shop. Something I have really missed over the past six months when we have had to drive everywhere.

So, I'll be back next week, and then every week, with my writing and reading news. In the meantime, any tips for better time management and how to be more organised would be very gratefully received!

  1. Good luck with your move. It sounds a lovely place to move to. My tip for organisation is to realise what are the most important jobs/tasks/chores/errands for that particular day and go from there.

    1. Thanks Sally. I do make lists but then tend to get sidetracked and do other things. I probably need to be more disciplined!

  2. I have 5 children, one of whom is still at home all day, he's nearly 3. I have taken to writing in the evenings, I try to write every evening even if it means staying up later than I should. I try not to get distracted by TV as that leeches time away like nothing else ... it's so easy and tempting! Also my husband works long hours, and on most Saturdays, but now that I have started to get somewhere with my writing ... now I'm "professional" ... he is staying home every other Saturday so I can write out in my summerhouse in peace away from the kids and the home. The time is there, but you have to work at harnessing it :)

    1. Crikey Louise - with 5 kids I'm surprised you find time to do anything else! Well done for making sure you fit it all in despite having some serious distractions and a very busy life.

  3. Hi Amanda .. good luck is all I can say - and I'm so pleased to see you've found yourself a wonderful sounding cottage and working farm to live in - what a great start to 2013.

I don't know that part of Devon ... but all I can say is very good luck and hope to see you around ... cheers Hilary
